The Pharmacy Department is open 24 hours a day and is staffed with approximately 130 employees, including pharmacists, technicians, a medication safety coordinator, inventory control specialists, and an administrative coordinator. The entire pharmacy team works together to assure patients receive the highest quality pharmaceutical care possible. From our central pharmacy and 6 satellite pharmacy locations, we dispense 15,000 doses of medication daily. Through Cerner Millennium CPOE and Pharmacy management system, the Pharmacy processes more than 10,000 orders per day. Pyxis dispensing cabinets help distributes 90% of the medications for administration. The Pharmacy department manages a $55 million-dollar drug budget. Lexicomp serves as the system drug information

Primary responsibility is the front-line management of clinical practice and direct leadership of Pharmacy Clinical Divisions, including decentralized pharmacy practice, medication use systems, and patient-centered pharmacy services provided to hospital strategic business units and related specialty patient care areas. Manages the integration of clinical pharmacy services, drug utilization programs, and pharmacy operations throughout the institution. Ensures medication use is aligned with evidence-based best practices and regulatory standards by directly managing medication safety systems, regulatory compliance initiatives, patient quality services, and disease outcomes programs. Actively functions as a member of clinical pharmacy practice and interdisciplinary teams and proficiently delivers direct patient care, integrated operational services, pharmacist interventions, and medication therapy management to patients with a broad range of disease states. Directs the activities of pharmacists who work within assigned areas and oversees day-to-day staffing and pharmacist coverage of patient care service lines and care areas. Provides education to staff, develops and enforces institutional policies, and initiates development plans or corrective action as needed and in collaboration with other managers. Actively manages human, capital, and operational resources to collaboratively support patient care services, medication safety systems, regulatory compliance initiatives, and quality assurance programs throughout the Department of Pharmacy. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.
Knowledge, Skills, Education, & Experience Required:
Leadership qualities essential to operate effectively within the institution, develop and conduct training programs, and advance the practice of pharmacy
Proficiency in hospital pharmacy practice, patient-centered care, advanced pharmacy practice, medication therapy management, and evidence-based medicine
Proficiency with hospital computer systems, pharmacy technology, and pharmacy automation
Proficiency in general hospital pharmacy operations and regulatory compliance
Strong verbal and written communication, organizational, problem-solving, and customer service skills
Ability to analyze data and follow up and resolve discrepancies
Ability to keep accurate and complete records
Ability to interact constructively with supervisors, peers, and support personnel
Ability to define operational or program problems/needs and solutions
Ability to teach, precept, and facilitate experiential training
Ability to integrate clinical and distributive pharmacy services with quality improvement, teaching, research, and professional development activities

Working knowledge of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Accreditation Standards for Pharmacy Residency Programs
Expertise using Cerner pharmacy solutions and services (Preferred)
Expertise using Pyxis automated dispensing technology (Preferred)
Working analytical and data management skills (Preferred)
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (Preferred)
Working knowledge of the accreditation requirements of Det Norske Veritas and International Organization for Standardization quality management systems (Preferred)
Working knowledge of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists National Practice Standards (Preferred)
Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Pharm D
Three or more years of contemporary hospital pharmacy practice experience
PGY1 Pharmacy Residency and PGY2 Specialty Residency (Preferred)
Pharmacy leadership with supervisory experience (Preferred)
Practice experience in a large hospital (greater than 500 bed institution) and integrated healthcare system (three or more hospitals in system) (Preferred)
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:
Current, valid State of Florida Pharmacist license
Board certification from the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (Preferred)
Eligible for registration as a pharmacist preceptor with the Florida Board of Pharmacy and the various schools of pharmacy located within the State of Florida (Preferred)

Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Management
Manages and oversees pharmacy practice programs, directs patient care services, and medication systems to provide reliable, comprehensive, and individualized drug therapy that is aligned with patient needs, evidence-based best practices, regulatory standards, and budgetary targets.
Effectively collaborates with other hospital departments and strategic business unit leaders to promote cooperation and efficiency in providing patient's pharmacy care needs.
Provides departmental and institutional leadership for medical staff committees/meetings, hospital groups/task forces, and approved external programs/organizations.
Serves as departmental resource and liaison to physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and other hospital personnel and works closely with these individuals to establish quality infrastructures utilized within the department and throughout the medical center.
Assists with preparation of an annual budget and manages assigned budgets and financial resources including stewardship, cost control, and restriction/surveillance programs.
Schedule and Labor Management
Develops standards of performance to maximize staff roles in accordance with licensure.
Manages, monitors, and evaluates staff performance in assigned pharmacy areas to ensure accuracy and quality of services, completion of all tasks, and mitigation and correction of deficiencies.
Provides feedback and counseling regarding job performance including employee discipline if needed and completes performance appraisals for assigned employees.
Manages schedules and staff requests for PDO (vacations and holidays) and adjusts coverage for sick calls or staff shortages such that department workloads are covered and each area is provided coverage.
Monitors and reports usage of staff overtime, time and attendance deviations, and staff sick calls.
Leads recruitment, interview, and hiring processes for staff in assigned areas.
Maintains competent, skilled, and cooperative staff by coordinating training for new employees, coaching and mentoring of all employees, and routine professional development for all staff.
Develops a harmonious and satisfied staff by facilitating rewards/recognition programs and engagement initiatives and taking actions that appropriately maintain positive employee engagement.
Clinical Pharmacy Staffing
Actively performs all pharmacist functions and maintains active proficiency in operational programs, dispensing and compounding activities, hospital computer systems and medication ordering systems, and established standard work parameters.
Works as an active member of pharmacy division and multidisciplinary team to collaborate with healthcare providers and decentralized pharmacy staff, places practice priority on the delivery of patient-centered care, and provides accurate, safe, timely, and appropriate medication therapy based on patient needs.
Performance Improvement and Quality Outcomes Management
Monitors pharmacy practice performance, patient care services, cost containment activities, and budgetary performance via objective parameters.
Proactively uses data analysis techniques to track, monitor, and communicate the clinical quality, operational, and financial outcomes of assigned areas and to benchmark performance against internal targets and against local and national best practices.
Identifies, resolves, and reports short- and long-term obstacles to patient care and medication safety, regulatory compliance, or stewardship of resources.
Identifies practice-related issues which require evaluation and facilitates clinical research projects, quality improvement initiatives, or healthcare provider education as needed to advance practice.
Designs and implements new pharmacy programs, quality improvement changes, continuous quality assurance initiatives, and medication stewardship programs to advance the organization’s medication-use systems and promote optimal patient outcomes.
Professional Practice Advancement
Serves as a preceptor/educator for pharmacy residency and student experiential education programs, including maintaining proficiency in the four preceptor roles and active education/mentorship skills.
Develops student, resident, and staff training experiences/competencies and creates new relationships for teaching and training opportunities.
Maintains a sustained record of contribution to the total body of knowledge in pharmacy practice through internal/external presentations, publications, formal review for a peer-reviewed medical or pharmacy journal, and/or professional organization service.
Maintains a high professional profile and active membership in state and national pharmacy professional organizations (e.g. Florida Society of Health-System Pharmacists, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, etc.).
